Description

The Red Hat Update Infrastructure is a certificate-based content distribution network used by the MCP platform whereby clients can get updates for Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

If you need instructions on how to migrate existing Red Hat Servers to use the MCP update infrastructure, see:
How to Configure Existing Red Hat Servers to Use the MCP Update Infrastructure

Content / Solution:

As a Red Hat Certified Cloud Provider, the Managed Cloud Platform has an infrastructure in place in various geographic locations that allows clients to install software packages and updates for their Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.  This article describes the new v3 architecture for such updates that was introduced in May 2019. As of June 2019, all Cloud Servers deployed from OS images will use v3 architecture. Servers deployed prior to this date may need updating as described in Migrating to the new RHUI v3 Architecture.

The Content Distribution Servers (CDS) can be found in the North America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and Asia/Pacific regions, providing "geographically close" endpoints for downloading official Red Hat packages. These CDSs are behind a network load balancer which provides redundancy and ensures robust connectivity.

All MCP Red Hat images are already configured with the proper CDS server pair, thanks to the network load balancer, YUM only needs to connect to load-balancer name for the appropriate GEO. This ensures the client systems will always access the CDSs in the GEO where customer VMs are located.

Servers deployed from Customer Images imported from outside the MCP environment will need to convert the MCP update architecture as described in How to Configure Existing Red Hat Servers to Use the MCP Update Infrastructure.

The CDSs have been configured to provide several channels which have been added to the base OS channel, giving clients a wide selection of software to utilize on their Red Hat servers. The channels clients have access to include:
