Description

The Red Hat Update Infrastructure is a certificate-based content distribution network used by the MCP platform whereby clients can get updates for Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

If you're looking for instructions on how to migrate existing Red Hat Servers to use the MCP update infrastructure, see: How to Migrate Existing Red Hat Servers to Use the MCP Update Infrastructure

Content / Solution:

As a Red Hat Certified Cloud Provider, the Managed Cloud Platform has a global infrastructure in place that allows clients to pull software and updates for their Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. The Content Distribution Servers (CDS) can be found in the North America, Europe, South Africa, Australia and Asia/Pacific regions, providing "geographically close" endpoints for downloading official Red Hat packages. The distribution network uses the following systems:

Europecds01.eu1.rhui.mcp-services.netcds02.eu1.rhui.mcp-services.net

The Red Hat images are already configured with every CDS server and, thanks to the "fastestmirror" YUM plugin, will connect to the CDS server that has the fastest ping response time. This infrastructure provides the maximum redundancy, letting client systems use the CDS servers that are "geographically" closest or, in the event of a problem with those CDS servers, any other CDS server globally. This also allows clients to copy images between geographic regions without having to re-register their systems to another set of CDS servers. Simply refresh the cache (via 'yum makecache fast') and the system will start using the appropriate CDS servers.

In addition to this global infrastructure, several channels have been added to the base OS channel, giving clients a wider selection of software to utilize on their Red Hat servers. The channels clients will have access to include:
