This article describes how to manage Long-Term Retention of Snapshots for a Cloud Server.

Prerequisites:

  1. User must be Primary Administrator or have the Server Role assigned
  2. Server must have Snapshots enabled, and the Snapshot Plan must support Long-Term Retention
  3. Server's Snapshot Service state is NORMAL
  4. If Source and/or Replicated location is specified
    1. Long-Term Retention must be enabled in the location
    2. If a Replicated location is chosen, replication must already be enabled for the Server's Snapshot Service
    3. Long-Term Retention Frequency Days must be valid in all locations (Local, and Replicated) if both Local and Replicated Long-Term Retention are chosen
    4. Long-Term Retention Days must be valid in all locations (Local, and Replicated) if both Local and Replicated Long-Term Retention are chosen

How to Set Long-Term Retention

  1. From the Home page, click on the Data Center where the Server on which you want to enable Cloud Snapshots is located:


  2. The Data Center dashboard will be displayed. Click on the Network Domain where the Cloud Server on which you want to Enable Cloud Snapshots is located:


  3. Click on the Servers tab, then click on the Server on which you want to enable Cloud Snapshots. You will be directed to the Server Dashboard:


  4. Click on the Snapshot tab, then click on the Actions menu, and click on the Enable Long-Term Snapshot Retention button:


  5. The Enable Long-Term Snapshot Retention dialog will be displayed:


  6. Fill out the form with the desired information:

    • Enable Long-Term Retention for Local Snapshots - Check this box if you want to enable/disable Long-Term Retention for Local Snapshots

    • Enable Long-Term Retention for Replicated Snapshots - Check this box if you want to enable/disable Long-Term Retention for Replicated Snapshots (To enable, the server must be enabled for Snapshot Replication. See How to Manage Snapshot Replication on a Cloud Server)

      • Long-Term Retention Frequency Days - This field indicates how often a Long-Term Retention Image will be created. Use the drop-down menu or the sliding bar to set the desired amount

      • Long-Term Retention Days -  This field indicates how long a Long-Term Retention Image will be kept by the system. Use the drop-down menu or the sliding bar to set the desired amount

        You can use the drop-down menus, or the sliding bar to set both the Long-Term Retention Frequency Days and the Long-Term Retention Days

  7. Once the form has been filled out, click the Confirm button:


  8. The system will display a success message:


  9. The Snapshot tab will be updated to show the Long-Term Retention (Local) and/or Long-Term Retention (Replicated) tabs, depending on your selection above:

    Long-Term Retention Images Always Use 1 Core per Socket

    When the system creates a Long-Term Retention Image based off a Long-Term Retention Snapshot, the Long-Term Retention Image will always have 1 Core per Socket, and that may not match the source Snapshot.


  10. Click on the desired tab to see Long-Term Retention Snapshots:

    • Local

    • Replicated

Long-Term Retention Snapshots May Take Several Hours to Populate

It is important to note that once Long-Term Retention for Local and/or Replicated Snapshots has been enabled, it may take several hours for the Snapshots to appear in their respective tabs.


How to Manage Long-Term Retention

  1. Click on the Snapshot tab, then click on the Actions menu, and click on the Set Long-Term Snapshot Retention button:


  2. The Set Long-Term Snapshot Retention dialog will be displayed:

    Note: Notice that the Long-Term Retention Frequency Days is set to 60 days and the Long-Term Retention Days is set to 105 days

  3. Update the desired Settings:

    • Enable Long-Term Retention for Local Snapshots - Check this box if you want to enable/disable Long-Term Retention for Local Snapshots

    • Enable Long-Term Retention for Replicated Snapshots - Check this box if you want to enable/disable Long-Term Retention for Replicated Snapshots (To enable, the server must be enabled for Snapshot Replication. See How to Manage Snapshot Replication on a Cloud Server)

      • Long-Term Retention Frequency Days - This field indicates how often a Long-Term Retention Image will be created. Use the drop-down menu or the sliding bar to set the desired amount

      • Long-Term Retention Days -  This field indicates how long a Long-Term Retention Image will be kept by the system. Use the drop-down menu or the sliding bar to set the desired amount

  4. Once you have made the desired changes, click Confirm:


  5. The system will display a success message:


  6. The system will display the update(s):

    Note: The Long-Term Retention Frequency and Long Term Retention Limit have been updated

How to Disable Long-Term Snapshot Retention

  1. Click on the Snapshot tab, then click on the Actions menu, and click on the Disable Long-Term Snapshot Retention button:

  2. The Disable Long-Term Snapshot Retention dialog will be displayed. After you have verified that you have the correct Server, click Confirm:


  3. The system will display a success message:


  4. Long-Term Snapshot Retention will be disabled:


What Happens to my Long-Term Retention Images if I Disable Long-Term Retention?

When you disable Long-Term Snapshot Retention, Any Long-Term Retention Images are kept by the system until they expire. You also have the option of manually deleting them. See How to Delete Client and Long-Term Retention Images
