Covers known VMware issues with AV software and cloning that results in server being deployed without a virtual NIC connection

Content / Solution:

The presence of anti-virus software running when a virtual server starts up after cloning can interfere with VMware's ability to customize the server. The result is that servers can be deployed without any network connectivity and/or with other configuration problems.

Therefore, when creating a Client Image, anti-virus software such as Symantec Endpoint should be stopped and the services set to manual BEFORE cloning the image. Once you have deployed servers from the Client Image, these services can be restarted again.

This behavior is a limitation of VMware. For more information, see VMware's article "Customization of templates or clones in VirtualCenter may fail if third party software is installed".
